535. a glorious old Bachtiari tribal Persian carpet

Old Bachtiari tribal village Persian Carpet

535. Provenance: Bachtiari tribe, sub-tribe of Lurs, West central Iran

Size: 370 x 260 cm

Age: Circa 1930

Condition: Good. Corner damaged - repaired.

Notes: A classic Bachtiari garden carpet, with vibrant natural dyes. The Bachtiaris are nowadays two thirds sedentary, but maintain many of their tribal customes. Symmetrical single-wefted carpets woven on cotton foundations such as this piece, are normally regarded as 'village' or sedentary production. Although not finely woven these carpets use wonderful wool and dyes, and this tribal perception of a sophisticated Persian palace garden is charming.
