541. A luminous antique Sivas (?) Turkish carpet

541. Provenance: Sivas (?), West Central Turkey

Age: Circa 1920

Condition: Minor loss at ends, and slight damage to side cords - all easily repairable. Minor foldwear.

Notes: An unusual carpet in that, looking soley at the design one would assume that it was a Turkish prayer rug. In fact it is over three metres in length. The beauty of this piece lies in the simplicity of the design and in the luminous red of its mirab, borders and details. Fairly coarsely woven as befits the design, but a lovely carpet nonetheless.
