739. an intoxicating old Afghan Ersari rug

739. Provenance: Ersari tribe, Turkoman group of tribes, Northern Afghanistan

Size: 235 x 147 cm

Age: circa 1930

Condition: Good, with just minor fold wear (as can be quite common on all wool rugs)

Notes: Fantastic variation in shades and depth, due to the natural 'abrush' which results from differences in dye batches and hand-spun wool density and absorption. This is what sorts the chaff from the wheat in terms of Afghans and this one is definitely 'wheat'! A classic Ersari in rich madder colouring, with highlights in indigo.
